Specs

The Precision 15K is truly unique.  When you think of a 15-foot sailboat you think of a cramped, lightweight, tippy, centerboard dinghy.  This boat is just the opposite!  It is one of the few designs of its size with a ballasted keel instead of a centerboard, and its wide, 9 foot cockpit provides more space than many larger boats!

A 2012 model, this boat spent its entire life on Squam Lake.  The owners reluctantly parted with it because of advancing age. In fact, it was not sailed very much in recent years. It has been very well cared for and is still in extremely good condition.

This boat comes with a Magic-Tilt trailer for easy launching, and its hinged mast base and simple rig makes it fast and easy to rig the boat.

The Precision 15 was built by Precision Boat Works in Palmetto, Florida. More than 800 were built from 1995 to 2018.  The manufacturer lists the boat's design goals as "safety, stability, reliable handling, and sprightly speed under sail".

Review by Naval Architect Robert Perry

In a 2003 review of the Precision 15 K by naval architect Robert Perry, he wrote, "the target market for this boat could be family day-sailing, but the 15 would also make a very nice trainer. The hull is broad enough to provide stability without acrobatics. At 600 pounds the boat is also light enough to be fast and responsive. The broad and flattish sections aft mean that the 15 will be stable off the wind in a breeze. In light air you can move crew weight forward and get the tail out of the water to reduce wetted surface. The keel is a bulb-end plate-type with a draft of only 1 foot, 8 inches.

The cockpit is 9 feet, 4 inches long and the side decks are wide enough for comfortable hiking. The side decks will also help prevent swamping in the event of a knockdown. No centerboard means no centerboard trunk to interfere with the cockpit.

The rig is a simple sloop rig with swept-back spreaders. It doesn't get any more basic than this. There is a mainsheet traveler, and some attention to the vang is all that's needed to take care of leech tension. Jib lead tracks are adjustable for close sheeting angles.

An ideal trainer or family daysailer, providing both versatility and up-to-date performance.

Comments from Designer Jim Taylor

The Precision 15 is the smallest in the Precision Boat Works fleet, but she is by no means the least significant.

The Precision 15 has earned high praise from both owners and competitors for her lively and rewarding performance. And her affordable price and quality reputation have been achieved through simplicity of design and cost effective assembly, not compromises in her quality hardware and hand-laid solid fiberglass construction.

Designed to provide safety, stability, reliable handling, and sprightly speed under sail, she will shorthand beautifully under her large main alone; even better with her high aspect jib hoisted.

The Precision 15 features an unusually broad beam, substantial freeboard and high volume coamings to help prevent swamping or capsizing. She provides a large forward storage area and her cockpit is safe and comfortable for both adults and children, with footwells and seats unusually wide and deep.

You'll enjoy many years of safe and spirited sailing in your Precision 15. It has been designed with great care and intelligence; constructed with professional integrity and quality craftsmanship and materials to provide you long and careful pleasure of ownership and outstanding resale value when you sell.
